SEC Football Predictions: Week 5

SEC Football Predictions

Last week we went 5-3 on our predictions and were exactly correct on zero games. The misses were wins by Kentucky, South Carolina, and Florida against Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee respectively. The closest game to a correct score prediction was Georgia at Missouri which we missed by just three points.

Here are some score predictions for Week 4 of the FBS season:

Saturday, September 29

Louisiana @ (1) Alabama – At some point in 2018 Alabama will be tested. That won’t happen this week as Tua Tagovailoa sees his workday end at halftime. Alabama 59, Louisiana 0. MORE: Alabama 3 Keys

Arkansas @ Texas A&M – Arkansas was supposed to be much better than this. The problem is that while the defense has been outstanding against the run, the offense just isn’t working at all. The Hogs have scored 47 points over its last three games, Texas A&M might score more than that in 60 minutes here. Texas A&M 40, Arkansas 14. MORE: Arkansas 3 Keys, First Look: Texas A&M vs. Arkansas

Tennessee @ (2) Georgia – Georgia is the heavy favorite here for a reason. The Bulldogs are better than the Vols in every phase of the game, with special teams being a particular weakness for Tennessee. If this turns into a turnoverfest for the second week running for Tennessee – they turned the ball over six times against Florida – then this could be really ugly. Georgia 49, Tennessee 14. MORE: Georgia 3 Keys, Tennessee 3 Keys

Southern Miss @ (10) Auburn – Southern Miss has yet to play anyone with a pulse but the Golden Eagles are slinging the ball. The problem is that the ground game isn’t good enough to keep the Auburn defense guessing and the Tigers are primed to break out in a big way offensively. Auburn 45, Southern Miss 21. MORE: Auburn 3 Keys

Tennessee State @ Vanderbilt – This won’t be a walk in the park. The Tigers have the sixth ranked offense in the entire FCS and there is a defense here that will slow Vanderbilt down. The Commodores have to find a way to get the running game going to be a threat in SEC games and this is the week that the ground game emerges. Vanderbilt 42, Tennessee State 21. MORE: Vandy First Look: TSU

Florida @ (23) Mississippi State – Kentucky shutdown Mississippi State last time out by taking away the ability of dual-threat quarterback Nick Fitzgerald to use his feet and impact the ground game. Florida will try to do the same after their own big win a week ago, but the Bulldogs won’t be as generous in giving the ball back as Tennessee was. Dan Mullen coaching Florida here adds a wildcard factor to the battle. Mississippi State 28, Florida 17. MORE: Florida 3 Keys, MSU 3 Keys, First Look: Florida vs. MSU

South Carolina @ (17) Kentucky – This is a game Kentucky needs to win to prove that it is a serious contender in the SEC East. Whichever team runs the ball better – and whichever stops the run cold – will take home the victory. We will take any team featuring Benny Snell in that scenario. Kentucky 28, South Carolina 20. MORE: Kentucky 3 Keys, South Carolina 3 Keys, First Look: South Carolina vs. Kentucky

Ole Miss @ (5) LSU – There is an upset brewing here. Mississippi has been unreal through the air against everyone but Alabama. Louisiana Tech threw for 330 yards on LSU last week and the Tigers are last in the SEC in total offense. They win by controlling tempo and controlling the lines of scrimmage. That might not be enough against a Rebel passing attack looking for a giant SEC West scalp. Ole Miss 35, LSU 21. MORE: LSU 3 Keys, First Look: LSU vs. Ole Miss
