Vandy pitchers leaving mark on MLB
Vanderbilt continues to make an impact on Major League Baseball.
Seven former Commodores pitchers have made starts in the majors this season, which is the most for any college team in the nation, according to Vanderbilt assistant director of athletics communications Andrew Pate.
The former Vandy pitchers include Tyler Beede (San Francisco), Walker Buehler (Los Angeles Dodgers), Carson Fulmer (Chicago White Sox), Sonny Gray (N.Y. Yankees), Mike Minor (Texas), David Price (Boston) and Drew VerHagen (Detroit).
Beede made his debut in April, which ended in a 10-1 loss to San Diego, and made one other start.
Buehler, a rookie who made his debut last season, is 5-4 with a 3.32 ERA. He started in a combined no-hitter win over the Padres in May.
Fulmer is 2-4 with an 8.07 ERA and is now being used as a reliever in the minors.
Gray is 9-8 and also struggling with a 5.52 ERA. The Smyrna native was recently demoted to the bullpen.
Minor is 9-6 with a 4.61 ERA. He was scheduled to start Friday against the Angels, but was scratched due to back stiffness.
Price is 13-6 with a 3.69 ERA and pitching well after struggling earlier this summer.
VerHagen, who made one start among 24 appearances, is 2-2 with a 6.10 ERA.
