Army Game 1
Good start. McElvain throws 13 pitches, routine 6-3, routine F-7, 3rd out K with a sharply hit infield single by the #3 hitter. To the Vandy half of the 1st,
Re: Army Game 1
Jr. out 6-3 on a nice play by SS up the middle, Bulger given an infield hit on soft grounder to the hole that SS made a nice play on then short-hopped the 1B (I would've called it an E-6), Davis Ks looking on a pitch he questioned the ump (looked like a strike from my Lazy-Boy), and Keegs soft ground out to SS. Scoreless heading to the 2nd.
Re: Army Game 1
Mac walked the leadoff man in 2nd on 4 pitches, nothing close to a strike, then comes back strong to strike out the next two and get the 3rd out on a soft chopper 1-3. Up to 33 pitches. 0-0 heading to bottom 2.
Re: Army Game 1
Time for #9 hitter Noland to produce. After Kolwyk K and Young P-6, Diaz (2nd straight start) walked and Vaz singled to RF, Diaz to 3rd. Rightfielder looked fooled by Vaz single, it fell in front of him, looked catchable. Alas, Noland tops another big hopper into 4-3 final out. Scoreless going to 3rd.
Re: Army Game 1
Top 3: routine 6-3, routine 4-3, routine 5-3. Nice. McElvain not as sharp as last week, struggling somewhat to throw strikes, but getting it done. Cold (35°) could be contributing. To Jr and the top of the order...
Re: Army Game 1
Jr with long F-8 just short of the track. That's at least 5 warning track distance fly outs for Jr in 5 games. He looks to be lifting the ball on longer swings this year than last. Wish he would shorten his swing and put the ball in play and use that Usain Bolt speed of his.
Re: Army Game 1
Bulger with a 1-out looping single to right-center gap, Davis follows with made-to-order DP ball to 2B...dude dropped the ball on the exchange, everybody safe. Keegs out on deep F-8. Double steal. Need Kolwyk to come thru. He doesn't. Hard hit fly directly at the LF. Scoreless to 4th...
Re: Army Game 1
Leadoff walk, WP takes runner to 2nd.
1-0 Army. Ground ball headed right at perfectly positioned Kolwyk up the middle hit off McElvain's heel and bounced into RF. Sometimes luck is just bad.

Re: Army Game 1
Slow roller to Kolwyk's left, quick exchange and throw gets lead runner at 2nd. I didn't think he any chance at all, terrific play! Next guy Ks, 3rd out on deep fly to center that fooled Jr, he had to back up after his initial move to ball, nice recovery for the out. Time for bats to get going...
Re: Army Game 1
Leadoff 4-pitch walk to Young leads to a pitching change. Good, the Army starter had been very good to this point, very good location and change of speed.

Re: Army Game 1
Diaz walks, Vaz long F-8 to right-center gap, both runners tag. Noland with another opportunity. Tops another hopper to SS, but enough to get tying run home. 1-1.
Vaz is a good hitter, has a good eye and bat control. He is a most important cog on this team.
Jr swinging K on an off speed pitch, another big, long swing.
1-1 to the 5th.
