No more alumni basketball games, I suppose

Post by historybill »

In 2013 -- which in hindsight was during a "golden era" of Vanderbilt sports --I took my son to an alumni game at Memorial Gym where players from 1990-2006 played players from 2007-2013.

Byars, Mario Moore, Foster, Goulbourne, Tchiengang, Corey Smith, etc.

I guess Vanderbilt won't be able to do this in the future -- that is, unless the players are in their 50s and 60s.

I mean, if you transfer to somewhere else and play there, you aren't a Vanderbilt alum, right?

This may come as a surprise, but I don't think the alums can transfer with no more eligibility. I have been watching for Shan, Byars, Jenkins names in the portal, and they have yet to come up - though I remain hopeful they may transfer back from their current roles.

That said, I am considering putting my own name in the portal for academics.

You know, technically you are an alum of a school if you ever attended there.

Of course, I'm not sure who wants to see Beth Ann Rhozaski play against her cousin Charlie Rhozaski in an alumni game...

Wright and QMB are both graduates, so they are alums via any definition.

Think we had this debate long ago…..as I previously stated, I think it isn’t appropriate for a Uni to claim a non-graduating attendee as an Alum.

Does anyone know if David Price ever came back & finished his course work?

I went to North Texas for my Master's in Music and, much like Berklee in Boston, they love to trot out the list of famous musicians who went there: Pat Boone, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, Meatloaf, Norah Jones, etc. But the most famous graduate of the music school is... Lyle Mays. [Sad trombone]
(Don Henley did graduate from the university, but was an English major.)

Chris Singleton attended the VU School of Engineering for a semester. Do we count him?

Lyle Mays was a wonderful pianist. Loved him with Pat Metheny. May he rest in peace.
