Carter Young signs with the Orioles
A little bit of a surprise, as I figured he would instead play in Baton Rouge this season. Money was too good to pass up.

Re: Carter Young signs with the Orioles
Hope he got some NIL money from a Baton Rouge auto dealership before leaving Louisiana.
PS: Imagine much bonus money some of his high school teammates will be getting. They are much better ball players.
PPS: Wishing Carter well in the pros. He gave his all for the Commodores.

Good for him...seeing him at LSU would have put a bad taste in my mouth.

And the best farm system in the game under Mike Elias, who is now in his 4th season with the Orioles. He built the best farm by making moves up and down the draft. Carter entered the season with a 2nd rd grade and still has a bona fide major league tool with his glove. The O's are taking a calculated risk by paying 3rd rd money to a guy who had a bad year and fell down the board in large part due to the thought that he wouldn't sign. Signability is a critical component of draft position in MLB, which makes it completely different from the other sports.
You really have no idea how this MLB draft works, do you?

The O's that decided they didn't need Yaz. Oh well.
What I can't help but wonder is what Carter was looking for when he decided to transfer to LSU.

Know exactly how it works. I also saw the sloppy fielding, piss poor hitting, and general lack of leadership from Young this year. He outright cost us a couple of games and I see no prospect for him ever reaching the Bigs. Worth $1.3 million, but Keegan and Jones worth less? That is insane.Commodoredave wrote: ↑Tue Aug 02, 2022 8:34 amAnd the best farm system in the game under Mike Elias, who is now in his 4th season with the Orioles. Yes, they used to suck, but they don't this year, and yes, they are 17.5 games behind arguably the best team in baseball. The thing about the postseason is, once you are in it, you are in it. 2006 Cardinals finished 5 games over .500, won two playoff series and ultimately the WS.

Wow I wonder if they know something we don't. Great for him. Before that shoulder injury in 2021 he was possible first round. And then his play just collapsed. Glad things worked out for him.
I was expecting him to sign anyways as LSU seemed like such a bad fit. He may not have gotten a ton of playing time there. To sit on the bench in 2023 after a bad 2022 season could have killed whatever potential MLB future he had. So I was thinking he'd be better off taking whatever money he could get and go pro. Didn't think he'd get even half of what he did.

Re: Carter Young signs with the Orioles
I keep seeing people surprised at the amount. For an MLB team, that is "pocket change". They had the pool money because they couldn't sign their 3rd-round pick. Had McLean signed, CY signs for $100k and moves on. In short, signing for such a high amount isn't about CY or what the Orioles think of him. They can't roll the money forward, so better to spend it. CY just happened to be the beneficiary. Right place, right time.
