I don’t know. The problem with attributing lack of student interest to selective admissions and a national student body is the fact that certain other universities combine these same characteristics with packed arenas and huge enthusiasm for the basketball team. Have lived in eight states, in all of which identification with the flagship state university on the part of the vast majority of the population is just the way it works. I think the above-mentioned (but avoided) private school/academic issues have a lot to do with it. There are reams of “good ol’ boys” (and girls) in the fan bases of all the state schools, some of them alums and probably more of them sidewalk alums; relatively few such folk attend or embrace Vanderb...
